About this Guide

Copyright is complex and can be challenging to understand. This guide is intended to provide faculty at Eastfield College with information and resources to develop a basic, general understanding of U.S. Copyright Law as it relates to academia and teaching. This guide and the third-party site links provided are not intended as legal advice. For legal questions related to copyright, please contact the DCCCD General.

DCCCD Copyright Policy

What is DCCCD's Copyright Policy?

Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) and Eastfield College respect and abide by U.S. federal copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code). The following is the DCCCD Copyright Policy:

The libraries of the colleges of DCCCD respect the copyrights of others. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the reproduction, distribution, and showing of copyrighted material in all formats and in all situations. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a copy or a duplicate of selected resources. However, one of these specified conditions is that the reproduction may not be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research."

Copyright of media resources is more narrowly defined.  Use outside of a classroom context may require public performance licensing.  Please consult with media staff regarding fair use related to specific media items.

If a user makes a request for, or later uses, the reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.  Faculty, staff and students are personally responsible for compliance. Violators of copyright laws may be subject to both civil and criminal penalties and/or disciplinary action. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a request if, in its judgment, fulfillment would violate copyright law.

This policy was approved by the DCCCD Legal Council on September 28, 2005.
